“Play permits the child to resolve in symbolic form unsolved problems of the past and to cope directly or symbolically with present concerns. It is also his most significant tool for preparing himself for the future and its tasks.” ~ Bruno Bettelheim (child psychologist)

When I think back to my younger days play was very important. Recess was a key component and there was plenty of equipment to use during recess. I had many choices and much freedom even in my elementary years to play with my friends. We jumped rope, played hand games and went to the park often. My parents supported my development by allowing me to explore the environment. They provided me with toys to use at home and supported me when I joined activities in the community.
I feel that play is very different today. I know that children do not have the same opportunities as I did back then. Safety is a big concern especially when children are playing in some neighborhoods. Many teachers are concerned about test scores and children's ability to master certain skills which limits their ability to play.
I feel that throughout a person's life play is incorporated. Wheteher it is play within a child's classroom or play in the home with family, it still holds significance. As an adult I enjoy playing with my child and laughing with him. I believe that adults may not play with toys, but incorporate play into their lives somehow.
