Poverty's impact

Poverty is an issue that continues to affect many people worldwide. My personal experience with dealing with the issues of poverty is everyday in the areas that I work in.  In this case poverty has caused some of the teenagers that I work with to not be focused on completing school and also to be neglected in many cases.  Because many of these teenagers often make the decision to drop out of high school poverty continues to be an ongoing cycle.  Many of these teenagers also become pregnant at an early age and lack resources to provide for their children and this leads to their child lacking basic necessities and little attention is paid to immunizations for children. There are many programs that are centered on the parent-child relationship to encourage interactions.  These programs are usually offer, child care assistance, financial resources, home visiting components and opportunities for advancement in their educational career.  I decided to study the Philippines because more than 40 percent of the Filipino households earn less than $2 a day. The government launched a five year cash conditional cash transfer programme known as ‘Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Programme’ or ‘4Ps’. The program is a poverty reduction social development strategy that provides conditional cash grants for the poorest households. This program will assist with approving healthcare, nutrition and education for children under 14. This program provides additional support and assistance for families. As a result of this program participants have been able parenting skills, financial literacy and business skills.

You are so right. Poverty does affect teenagers in a tremendous way. When I lived in Texas, a friend girl of mines worked as a Social worker and it was her job to go to the homes of some teenage mothers to ensure that they were doing what was necessary for both themselves and their children. It was a subject that we would discuss often. Some children really wanted help and wanted to overcome their condition. However, there were others that were comfortable and was content with their condition.
My friend paid special attention to the individuals that were comfortable. We would have conversations on several occasions and she would mention that her goals was to show the young mothers that there are better opportunities in life that awaits them.

This was an interesting post.

It is amazing to see the results that poverty causes. It is surreal to see just how many actually struggle to get out of poverty. I too see children being neglected, leaving children to raise themselves, often times leading many to get pregnant or starting using drugs because no one is around to guide them. Poverty is a serious issues that we as a whole need to come together and fight. What would the world be like without poverty? A better place where education would become a main priority for many.

Hi Ladies, this issue of poverty is very overwhelming and at times when I am driving to work, it saddens me to know the conditions that many of these people are living in. Katrina your friend's job seems very similar to mine. Thanks for the feedback.

It is very upsetting that some many of our nations teenagers have to choose between finishing school and helping with the families income. I think the programs that help pregnant teenagers return to school after having their baby are amazing, though I feel it would be better if teenagers didn't become pregnant but that's for a different discussion. When I was teaching middle school, one of my 7th graders missed most of the year due to labor complications after having her second child. She completed at least that year of school because a program drove her to school and childcare everyday.

Shevia,

I agree with you that poverty repeats itself. It is a terrible cycle and I think one of the purposes of enhancing early childhood education is to try and break this cycle. Many of the parents with children enrolled in our school are struggling financially at the moment. In fact, without the VPK program (which provides free education for all 4 year olds in Florida) many of these children would not have the opportunity for preschool. As a mission school, we think of ourselves as an outreach for christ, and we teach everyone they have a special gift to offer the world. We hope this roots in their hearts and with a spiritual and academic approach, we hope to encourage these kids to be all they can be no matter what their circumstances.
