My Family
If a major catastrophe occurred in my country and I was given the option to bring three items I would bring a family photo album, plant and a blanket. The photo album would allow me to remember my family members by reminiscing on the memories that we shared. The plant is a symbol of my household because I grew up around plants and it would serve as a symbol of my home. The blanket would be used to symbolize the warmth that we shared as a family and it would be used at bed time. I would explain the purpose of each item as well as what my family means to me. I would be sad if I was told that I could only keep one personal item upon arrival. I think that having one thing would be a blessing because many times catastrophic events occur and many families lose valuable items. Most often, it is not the expensive items that families cry about losing, but it is the photo albums and some family heirlooms that have been passed down. Because I value the closeness that I have with my family, I would be devastated to leave them. Each week I have been learning more about diversity and the variations of different culture. I am hoping that my knowledge of culture continue to deepen as this course continues.

Hi Shevia,
I enjoyed your post. Your post is insightful. It seems to me that we are more alike than not. Most of us would bring the photo album or heirloom. I think that it speaks to feel connected. This need crosses all demograhics, all cultural and ethinic backgrounds and ages.
Hi Shevia:
I enjoyed reading your post as well. You are right: people usually don't cry over losing expensive things. It's those things that money can't buy that we hate to lose the most. Material things can be replaced but sentimental memories and pictures cannot, unless you have them saved on a disc or something somewhere. But even with that, those are usually the most recent pictures.
